Farmer Nate

Greetings! My name is Nate, and I live on a dairy in the suburbs of Chicago. We care for 600 cows and 550 young animals on our farm. We also grow crops on 1500 acres of land. If you’ve ever wondered what cows eat or how many glasses of milk a cow produces in a single day, just ask me. I’m happy to have the opportunity to answer your questions.

Does a cow have to have a calf before it will produce milk?
Sent by Ann
Yes, a dairy cow can only produce milk after she gives birth – this is when she begins to lactate.  Thanks for checking in!

Why do you like doing a dairy farm for a job?
Sent by Trace

One thing I love about what I do is that it varies greatly from day-to-day and season-to-season. The one constant is that my entire day is focused on taking care of my animals and land – whether milking the cows, helping a cow give birth, feeding calves, preparing feed for my herd, cleaning stalls, sanitizing the milking equipment, spreading manure on fields, doing crop work, fixing equipment or managing employees – my entire day is spent caring for my animals and protecting the land. It’s gratifying to know I’m growing a healthy farming business for my family and future generations. Thanks for drinking milk, my family appreciates it!
